Year Execution:
2008
Country:
Sudáfrica
Organization in Charge:
People ́s Environmental Planning PEP
USD:
40,000
Zone:
Urban
Description:

PEP is trying hard to build cheap housing that is easy to transport and assemble for the poorest of poor, following the model of the Chilean "mediagua". During this year they gained experience and initiated new partnerships. PEP worked in close collaboration with FEDUP, COURC and other NGO’s and CBO’s. It engaged government to create awareness about the need of including affordability in housing programs. Gradually it captured interest of poor communities who now are willing to access this shelter. Some groups affected by fires and other disasters obtained fully subsidized shelter. A micro-credit system is being developed as a future possibility for the poor to access these units directly.
