Housing poor families of Mpasa1/NSELE2
SELAVIP has been helping GE to build small houses in Mpasa1. Now the objective was to complete 35 more houses for families still waiting for help. A community savings mechanism is in place and provided additional resources to complete the project. 15 houses were improved and 20 new units built for homeless families. As a result, these families now have a better home, the community is stronger and the savings system is validated. Costs are reasonable - US$ 700 and US$ 800 for betterment and building, respectively. First, materials were bought by GE; then families worked with the technical staff and facilitators to prepare the construction. All family members were involved during the whole process, even the children. They contributed with sand, water and labour to produce concrete blocks. Local authorities also participated in an active way to help with the storage of materials and making it easier to obtain all permits required to build. GE, local government and the community are happy with results obtained and should now be capable of implementing new projects by themselves. Contact: Mme. Marie-Thérèse MULANGA mtmulanga@yahoo.fr
