Resettlement of Poor Urban Families

Year Execution:
Congo (Kinshasa)
Organization in Charge:
CDDC- Centre de Droit et de Developpement du Congo
Nº of Families helped:

Selection of 30 families among the poorest and homeless was done with the collaboration of local parishes, local authorities and other NGOs. Then, future participants were informed about the project and their rights and obligations if they agreed to participate. An agreement was signed under supervision of lawyers and local authorities. The construction work is not completed because of conflicts that made it necessary to revise the original list and come to a legal agreement with some families. Finally, 20 houses are under construction and will be ready in November, with the 1. part of funds sent by SELAVIP. CDDC is now asking for remaining USD 10,000 that were approved, in order to build 10 additional houses. Fr. Josse will visit the project in November to see if the conflict is solved. Meanwhile, CDDC will continue to build with without contribution of the families. Fr. Josse should check this out because in most projects the poor provide at least unskilled labour and some local materials. It is expected that local authorities consider this small scale project as an alternative that can be replicated. Contact: Deo Mulikuza Mirindi
